解法
砂漠に大きな建造物ということで、まずThe Lineかと思いましたが、地図を見ると違いました。
"complex desert from 2013"などで検索しても有力な情報は得られませんでした。問題文の“ancient and new”や衛星画像の砂漠の状態からエジプトであると推定して検索すると、The Octagonが見つかります。
WikipediaのState Strategic Command Centerの記事にある座標29°56′16.5″N 31°39′14.1″EをもとにGoogle Earthの2013年を見ると、問題と同様の衛星画像が見つかりました。
